Brasilia’s WHO Meeting Explores the Potential of Genomics for Health: Unleashing Precision Medicine in the Americas

The World Health Organization (WHO) is hosting a regional meeting on Human Genomics for Health: Enhancing the Impact of Effective Research in Brasilia, Brazil from May 15-16, 2024. This conference aims to promote the implementation of genomics in clinical medicine and public health, as well as strengthen genomics research in the Americas.

Genomics is a rapidly evolving field that focuses on characterizing all the genes of an organism rather than individual genes studied in genetics. It has provided insights into areas such as clinical care, food safety, infection control, and is an essential component of the “One Health” approach.

The meeting is organized by WHO’s Science and Knowledge for Impact Unit (SK/EIH) with support from PAHO, the PAHO Brazil Country Office, and the Ministry of Health, Brazil. It will bring together representatives from PAHO Member States and regional experts and researchers working within the precision medicine ecosystem.

One of the objectives of this meeting is to raise awareness about the WHO Science Council report on equitable access to genomics research and technologies globally. Additionally, participants will share experiences and best practices in implementing genomic evidence to improve precision medicine and public health strategies. Challenges and strategies for genomics implementation will also be identified during this event.
