New study reveals Northwest Michigan’s outdoor recreation economy brought in $1.15 billion in 2022

In 2022, the outdoor economy in northwest Lower Michigan had a significant impact on the regional economy, contributing $1.15 billion to the Gross Regional Product. This is revealed in a new study that highlights the importance of outdoor recreation as a major economic driver in the area.

The study found that the outdoor economy in the 10 counties of northwest Lower Michigan employed 4,712 workers and had a higher concentration of agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting employment compared to national averages for regions of similar size. Additionally, residents in the region spend 32 percent more on boats, trailers, campers, and recreational vehicles than the national average.

Stacie Bytwork, President of the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce and Networks Northwest board member, emphasized the importance of this study in helping stakeholders identify opportunities in the recreational sector. By understanding the region’s unique recreational assets, stakeholders can develop strategies to attract growth and make northwest Michigan stand out as a destination of choice for outdoor enthusiasts.
