Booking Platforms Accused of Misleading Consumers: A Case of Fake Discounts and Scarcity Scams

Booking.com receives reprimand from Dutch Consumers’ Association for deceiving consumers

The Dutch Consumers’ Association has accused online booking companies Booking.com and Agoda.com, both part of Booking, of misleading consumers. The association claims that these booking sites display fake discounts, show incomplete prices, and create a sense of urgency by suggesting scarcity that does not actually exist. Although Booking had promised improvements in these areas in 2020, the Consumers’ Association still found discrepancies.

According to the association, the booking sites advertise prices without including unavoidable taxes and service costs, which is against the rules. Booking.com also faces issues with scarcity because it includes private homes and apartments that may not be available year-round, unlike hotels. Agoda is also accused of falsely claiming fewer available rooms than actually exist and attaching conditions to its lowest price guarantee that are not transparent.

The director of the Consumers’ Association, Sandra Molenaar, called these practices deliberate tricks to pressure consumers into making quick decisions based on false information. In 2020, Booking and Expedia were reprimanded by regulators for similar manipulation techniques and fake discounts. The Consumers’ Association has reported Booking’s violations to the Dutch Consumer & Markets Authority for further action.

Booking responded by stating its commitment to providing transparent information for travelers, including accurately displaying fees and taxes and availability of accommodations. The company also expressed its willingness to work with authorities to address any concerns. Expedia, on the other hand, seems to have made progress in adhering to regulatory guidelines since the reprimand in 2020. The Consumers’ Association will continue monitoring the situation and advocating for fair practices in the online booking industry.

In conclusion, online booking companies should be held accountable for their actions when it comes to advertising prices accurately and transparently for consumers. It is crucial that companies provide honest information so that travelers can make informed decisions about their travels.
