Taiwan is facing increasing threats from communist China, which considers the island as part of its territory and intensifies its military activities in the region with the aim of annexing Taiwan. Amidst these tensions, parliamentarians from both the Democratic and Republican Parties in the US Congress recently visited Taiwan to reaffirm American commitment to the security of the island.
During their visit, American lawmakers held meetings with Taiwanese leaders and pledged to enhance security cooperation between the US and Taiwan. They emphasized the importance of upholding peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, expressing concerns over China’s military exercises and aerial incursions near Taiwan’s airspace. Despite not having formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the US is obligated by law to provide weapons to ensure the island’s security, a commitment that was highlighted during this visit.
Republican congressman Michael McCaul of Texas, who chairs the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, assured Taiwan’s President William Lai Ching-te that efforts are being made to expedite the approval and shipment of defense resources for the island. In addition to security discussions, parliamentarians also explored ways to strengthen economic and trade ties between the US and Taiwan.
