Breaking down Biden’s road map for Israel-Gaza

According to a report from al-Majalla, a Saudi magazine based in London, President Joe Biden of the United States has announced a proposed ‘road map’ to end the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The agreement is divided into three phases, each lasting 42 days.

In the first phase, 600 trucks of humanitarian aid will enter Gaza daily, while 33 hostages including women, children, elderly, sick and injured individuals will be released either alive or deceased. Israeli troops will partially withdraw from Gaza once the hostages are released, allowing unarmed Gazans to return home. Negotiations for a ceasefire extension will take place during this period.

For each female or child hostage released, 30 Palestinian female or child security prisoners will be released based on lists provided by Hamas. Similarly, the release of sick, injured or elderly hostages will lead to the release of 30 elderly, sick or injured Palestinian prisoners. Additionally, the release of a female soldier will result in the release of 50 prisoners in accordance with lists from Hamas. If there are not enough live hostages for the 33 releases in the first phase, Hamas will provide bodies in exchange. On the other hand, Israel will release Palestinian minors arrested in Gaza after October 7 as part of the agreement.

By the 16th day of the truce, indirect talks will begin for the second phase of the agreement which involves a sustainable ceasefire declaration and complete withdrawal of Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) from Gaza. The final phase would involve an exchange of bodies and a multi-year reconstruction process for Gaza overseen by Egypt, Qatar and United Nations before lifting
