Beyond the Juice: Could Orange Peels Help Prevent Heart Disease?

New research shows that orange peel extract could potentially enhance heart health

New research led by the University of Florida suggests that orange peels may have a positive impact on cardiovascular health. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of various racial and ethnic groups, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Recent studies have shown that certain gut bacteria play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease by producing trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) when they feed on specific nutrients during digestion. Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have found that levels of TMAO can potentially predict future cardiovascular disease.

Yu Wang and her team received a $500,000 USDA grant to explore the potential of orange peel extracts, which are rich in beneficial phytochemicals, in reducing TMAO and trimethylamine (TMA) production. The scientists tested two types of extracts: a polar fraction and a non-polar fraction.

This study sheds light on the potential of utilizing orange peels as a natural way to improve cardiovascular health by reducing harmful gut bacteria and their byproducts. Further research is needed to fully understand the impact of orange peels on heart health.
