Laura Saunders, a Conservative candidate running in the Bristol North West constituency, has faced criticism for placing a bet on the election date. This comes after it was revealed that an adviser to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Craig Williams, also wagered £100 on the same date. Williams acknowledged his error in judgment but did not disclose whether he had inside information. Additionally, it was reported that a bodyguard of Sunak placed a similar bet and was later suspended and briefly arrested.
Saunders has been associated with the Tories since 2015, and while the details of her bet remain unknown, she has been quiet about the matter when approached by the media. Meanwhile, the Conservative Party has been under fire for its handling of the betting scandal. Just two weeks before the election, Tony Lee, Saunders’ husband and campaign director, went on leave due to being investigated by the Gambling Commission for his involvement in betting on the election date. The party spokesperson stated that they were informed about “a small number of individuals” involved in such activities.
Labour is calling for an investigation into the matter and questioning why Saunders and Lee are still running while Lee’s police officer colleague was suspended and briefly arrested. Labour’s campaign director Pat McFadden urged Sunak to address the issue promptly with integrity as it casts doubt on the integrity of the electoral process.
Recent polls suggest that Conservatives may suffer significant losses in upcoming elections with YouGov predicting they could lose 257 representatives ending up with only 108 seats while Savanta research institute predicts they could retain only 53 seats. In a surprising move on May 22nd, Sunak announced July 4th as an election date which had been anticipated to take place later in fall.
