Better Responses for Mental Health Crises: The Success of the Marcus Alert System in Arlington and Beyond

Arlington County Unveils New Mental Health Crisis Response System – NBC4 Washington

The Marcus Alert System has been implemented in Arlington County to improve the response to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. This system connects the 911 call center, regional crisis center, and law enforcement to provide better services and responses to those in need.

The Marcus Alert System is also being used in Prince William, Loudoun, and Fairfax Counties. It was named after Marcus-David Peters, a biology teacher who was killed by police during a mental health crisis. The aim of the system is to bridge the gap between behavioral health and criminal justice systems by providing equitable access to behavioral health resources for all individuals.

A law passed in 2020 requires Virginia localities to establish protocols for enhanced responses to mental health calls. Emergency call takers undergo specialized training to handle mental health and psychotic disorders effectively and de-escalate crisis situations compassionately.

The goal of the Marcus Alert System is to direct individuals in crisis towards behavioral health responses instead of law enforcement. By 2028, all cities and towns in Virginia with more than 40,000 residents are required to have this system in place to better respond to those in mental health crises.
