Germany calls in Russia’s charge d’affaires over allegations of cyberattacks

The German Foreign Ministry has summoned the Russian charge d’affaires in response to allegations that Moscow was responsible for a series of cyberattacks against Berlin in 2022. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they, along with their partners, will not tolerate cyber attacks and are prepared to take all necessary measures to prevent, deter, and retaliate against Russia’s aggressive behavior in cyberspace.

The German Interior Ministry had previously revealed that the APT28 hacker group, believed to be directed by the Russian Military Intelligence Agency (GRU), exploited security vulnerabilities in the Microsoft Outlook application to gain unauthorized access to the email accounts of German officials. These attacks targeted the ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD), as well as Germany’s defense, space, information technology, and logistics sectors.

In response to the cyber threats, the German Interior Ministry spokesperson emphasized the importance of promptly addressing security gaps and expediting the process to enhance cybersecurity measures. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced that Germany is working closely with the European Union (EU) and NATO to address the threat posed by Russian cyberattacks, especially as elections are approaching in the European Parliament and other countries in the region.

The Russian Embassy in Germany has denied the accusations made by Berlin, with the Russian Charge d’Affaires refuting claims of involvement by Russian state agencies and the APT28 group as baseless. They characterized
