Behind Closed Doors: Canyon’s Secret Development of a High-Pivot Suspension Downhill Bike for Racing

Developing a new bike in secret presents a challenge to companies as they must balance testing and showcasing the bike at high-profile events without jeopardizing sales of their current models. One such brand that is quietly working on a new version of their Sender downhill bike is Canyon. The prototype boasts an angular carbon chassis, high-quality aluminum hardware, and neatly integrated cables.

The most significant change from the current Sender is the high-pivot suspension design, similar to Norco’s prototype downhill bike. This shift aligns with predictions that downhill bikes will become more specialized for racing with intricate suspension systems. The design of the new Sender features a complex suspension linkage system that includes the swing arm, seat stay, chainstay, triangular link, swing link, and shock.

The main portion of the swing arm that controls the rear axle path is the seat stay, which moves in a rearward arc. The floating chainstay is attached to the concentric rear axle pivot and pulls on the triangular link, rotating around the bottom bracket. An arm on the triangular link compresses the shock via the swing link. The forward shock mount is adjustable, allowing for different geometry or rear wheel sizes. The pivot placements in this intricate system suggest it can accommodate various shock types, such as a coil shock or Fox Float X2.

Canyon has not released much information about the new Sender yet; however, spectators may catch a glimpse of it at Fort William in June 2021. The brand’s dedication to innovation and performance is evident in its meticulous design of this prototype set for a new era of downhill bikes tailored specifically for racing.

In conclusion, developing a new bike in secret poses challenges for companies as they must balance testing and showcasing without jeopardizing sales of their current models. Canyon’s dedication to innovation and performance shines through in its meticulous design of its new Sender prototype set for a new era of downhill bikes tailored specifically for racing.
