Bay Area Native Devin Cooley Signs Two-Year Contract with Calgary Flames, Becoming First Sharks Alum to Play in Net for Another NHL Team

Bay Area native Devin Cooley recently signed a two-year contract with the Calgary Flames, becoming the first Bay Area player to appear in net for the San Jose Sharks. Cooley, who is 27 years old and from Los Gatos, played six games for the Sharks in the 2023-24 season after being elevated to the No. 3 netminder position following a trade that sent Kaapo Kahkonen to the New Jersey Devils. In those games, Cooley posted a 2-3-1 record, with his first NHL victory coming in overtime against the St. Louis Blues on April 6.

Cooley’s contract with the Flames includes a two-way deal for the 2024-25 season, with salaries of $775,000 in the NHL and $400,000 in the AHL, and a one-way contract for $775,000 in the 2025-26 season. After signing his contract with the Flames, Cooley expressed his gratitude to the Sharks organization and fans. He mentioned that despite no longer playing for the Sharks, he will continue to support and watch the team from outside as a fan.

The Sharks will now be looking to acquire a new No. 3 goalie behind Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek following Cooley’s departure.
