The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is marking World Tuberculosis Day on March 24 to raise awareness about the importance of tuberculosis (TB) prevention and treatment. In 2023, there were 41 active TB cases reported among DuPage County residents, with numbers varying from year to year. As a key player in preventing and controlling communicable diseases like TB, the DCHD works closely with healthcare providers and patients to ensure that everyone receives the care they need.
Tuberculosis is a highly contagious disease that can be fatal if left untreated. It spreads through the air when someone with active TB coughs, sneezes, speaks or sings. Those with latent TB infection do not spread the disease but are at risk of developing active TB if left untreated. Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV, face an even higher risk of developing TB disease.
The DCHD’s TB Clinic provides essential services to DuPage County residents, including testing, diagnosis and treatment for both active TB disease and latent TB infection. Appointments are required for all services, and walk-ins are not accepted. To schedule an appointment, individuals can call (630) 682-7400. For more information about the clinic’s services and how to prevent the spread of TB, residents can visit the DCHD website at https://www.dupagehealth.org/326/Tuberculosis
It is crucial that members of the community understand the risks associated with TB and take proactive steps to prevent its spread. By working together and taking necessary precautions against this disease, we can help ensure a healthier future for ourselves and our neighbors in DuPage County.
