For years, food enthusiasts have been raving about Spain’s culinary offerings, and now it’s official: the European hub is home to the world’s best restaurant. Disfrutar, located in Barcelona, has taken the top honors on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
Run by chefs Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch, and Mateu Casanas, Disfrutar has been a regular on the list since 2018, debuting at No. 19 and climbing steadily since then. Because of its win this year, it will no longer be eligible to make the list in the future.
Spain claimed three of the top five spots on this year’s list, with a total of six restaurants in the top 50. Chef Victor Arguinzoniz’s Asador Etxebarri, located in Atxondo, Spain was this year’s runner-up. Among American restaurants, New York City’s Atomix was the highest-ranking. Hong Kong’s Wing made the highest debut on the list this year, coming in at number 20.
The rankings are determined by members of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, a group of chefs, food writers, and other industry experts. It’s clear that Spain continues to reign supreme in the culinary world as it takes home two spots in the top 10 for next year: Disfrutar and Asador Etxebarri.
