Barbara Melvin of SC Ports Discusses Maritime Industry in Charleston: Insights on Costs, Responsibility and Future Expansion Efforts

The maritime industry of Charleston was the focus of a recent conversation at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, where locals gathered to hear from Barbara Melvin, President and CEO of SC Ports. Led by Ted Kinghorn, who organized the LENS IOP Leadership Series event, the exchange was an opportunity for the community to connect and spark conversations about the industry.

Melvin began by explaining how SC Ports operates, emphasizing that it is much more complex than just moving boxes on and off ships. She highlighted how ports operate on a fixed cost model, where volume can make up for expenses. In contrast, truck companies operate on a per-mile basis, which can result in delays and impact truck drivers’ earnings.

As leader of a team of 1,000 workers, Melvin understands the responsibility that comes with her role. She stressed the importance of considering not only how her team interacts with each other but also how they engage with the community around them. Melvin also pointed out that as a nation, we all share responsibility for the maritime industry since 70% of US GDP is consumption-based, split between goods and services. During COVID-19, goods consumption in the US increased significantly compared to other countries, driving global spending.

Looking ahead to future expansion efforts, Melvin mentioned upcoming projects such as the opening of the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal in North Charleston later this year and recent investments in railroad expansion upstate and in Dillon. As one of South Carolina’s leading women in business for 2023 and with over 25 years of experience at SCPorts, Melvin’s expertise and dynamic leadership have been recognized by port authority.
