Chinese scientists have successfully transformed bamboo into a transparent material that is fireproof, waterproof, and smokeproof, positioning it as a competitor to traditional glass. Bamboo’s fast growth rate and high output make it an attractive alternative to glass in the construction industry. In a recent study conducted by the Central South University of Forestry and Technology (CSUFT), researchers utilized bamboo’s fast growth and regeneration rate to create a transparent material with a multitude of favorable properties.

The internal structure and chemical composition of bamboo are similar to wood, allowing the researchers to apply a similar method to make bamboo transparent. By removing lignin and treating the bamboo with inorganic liquid sodium silicate, the bamboo fibers become transparent, fireproof, waterproof, and resistant to smoke and carbon monoxide. The final product consists of three layers, with each layer contributing to the material’s overall strength and durability. This transparent bamboo material boasts a light transmittance of 71.6%, making it an ideal candidate for various applications, including as a construction material and a substrate for perovskite solar cells.

Researchers are now focusing on large-scale production and exploring additional functionalities of transparent bamboo.
