Baby Diagnosed with Measles in Butler County after International Travel: Health Officials Urge Vaccination

A Butler County infant under one year old has been diagnosed with measles, according to health officials. The baby acquired the virus through international travel and returned to the US through a Chicago airport before traveling to Ohio by car.

Butler County Health Commissioner Erik Balster made the announcement on Thursday, prompting health staff to work diligently over the July 4th holiday to notify close contacts of the child about their possible exposure. Those who were not contacted can assume they were not exposed to measles.

The best way to protect yourself and your family from measles is through vaccination. Infants under one year old who are traveling are advised to receive an early dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine between 6 and 11 months of age, as recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you have any questions about vaccination or wish to schedule an appointment, you can contact the Butler County General Health District at 513-863-1770.
