On May 29, 2024, Austin FC supporters in Texas were seen waving flags in support of their team during the second half of their game against the Portland Timbers at Q2 Stadium. As the season progressed, the team’s roster was slowly being filled out with new signings.
One of the recent additions to the roster is Danish defender Mikkel Desler. The 29-year-old player had been rumored to join the club since January, with reports from The Athletic and international soccer media. Desler, a right back, previously played for Toulouse FC in France for three seasons, where he helped the team achieve promotion to the first division in 2022 and win domestic cup competitions in 2023.
Before his time in France, Desler played for Odense BK in Denmark for five seasons and FK Haugesund in Norway for two seasons. His contract with Austin FC is guaranteed through 2027 with a club option for 2028. Desler can start practicing with the team immediately but will not be eligible to play until July 20th after the MLS summer transfer window opens on July 18th.
