Austin-Bergstrom International Airport Leads the Way in Cutting-Edge Safety Measures for Summer Travel

New FAA technology enhancing air traffic awareness unveiled at Austin airport

The Federal Aviation Administration has recently implemented new airfield surveillance systems to enhance the situational awareness of air traffic controllers and reduce the risk of runway incidents. This cutting-edge technology will be operational at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport starting from June 30, making it one of only four airports in the country to utilize these systems.

The new system will display surface traffic to controllers at airports that currently lack a surface surveillance tool. Aircraft and ADS-B equipped vehicles will be depicted as icons on an airport map showing runways, taxiways, hold ramps, and other areas. With this new layer of protection in place, travelers can feel safer during the upcoming busy summer travel season.

In May 2024, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport experienced its busiest month ever in terms of passenger traffic, with almost 2.07 million passengers passing through the airport. This marked a significant milestone as only five other months have seen more than 2 million passengers at the airport. With these multiple layers of safety measures in place, the FAA aims to ensure that travelers can enjoy their summer trips without any safety concerns.
