Athletic Excellence: Captured in Photos

For any athlete, the moment the starting gun fires represents the culmination of weeks, months, and years of training with intense focus. It is essential for every athlete to be in their best physical and mental shape, with their unique definitions of health playing a crucial role in their performance and success. To support Picture of Health, six Bupa athlete ambassadors share their stories and delve into what “health” means to them.

Curtis McGrath, an Australian Para canoeist and former soldier, defines his Picture of Health as independence. Despite losing both legs in a mine blast in Afghanistan, Curtis remained determined to achieve his dreams. He declared on the stretcher that he would participate in the Paralympic Games, and less than two years later, he broke a world record and won the 200-meter VL2 world title in Moscow. With 14 gold medals and one silver to his name, including consecutive golds at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, Curtis continues to inspire others. He reflects on his journey, saying, “It’s amazing to be in Paris – another chapter in my story of resilience since the incident in Afghanistan. I’ve come a long way, and it’s exciting to be where I am today.”

Simone Biles is an American gymnast who has achieved great success despite facing many challenges along the way. She defines her Picture of Health as balance – not just physical balance but also mental balance. Simone has spoken openly about her struggles with anxiety and depression but has used these experiences to become stronger both physically and mentally. She has won numerous gold medals at international competitions and was named USA Gymnastics Athlete of the Year twice. Simone says, “I think it’s important for everyone to find their own definition of health that works for them. For me, it’s about finding that balance between mind and body.”

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is a former professional wrestler turned actor who defines his Picture of Health as discipline – both physical discipline through exercise and diet but also mental discipline through hard work ethic. Dwayne has achieved incredible success through hard work dedication towards achieving his goals which includes being named Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year 2019 for breaking box office records & becoming highest grossing solo actor ever . He credits much of his success to maintaining strict routines that allow him to push himself beyond what he thought was possible . Dwayne says,”Success isn’t given; it’s earned through blood sweat & tears”.
