Asteroid Defense: NASA, FEMA and International Partners Prepare for the Unthinkable in the Name of Planetary Security

Strategies and International Cooperation in the NASA Planetary Defense Exercise

On June 20th at 9.30pm Italian time, NASA will be broadcasting live to share recent developments in response strategies to a hypothetical asteroid impact on Earth. This comes after the fifth biennial Interagency Planetary Defense Exercise took place on April 2 and 3, 2024, at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland.

During the exercise, NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, FEMA, and the Office of Space Affairs of the United States Department of State evaluated the national response capacity to potential asteroid threats. Experts including NASA Planetary Defense Officer Emeritus Lindley Johnson, FEMA’s Leviticus “LA” Lewis, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory’s Terik Daly discussed the exercise’s history, purpose, the simulated scenario, and the results and recommendations.

This year’s exercise featured international collaboration in planetary defense and real data from NASA’s DART mission, which included Italy’s participation in the first technological demonstration in space for Earth’s defense. While there is currently no significant asteroid threat in the near future, NASA and international partners believe it is crucial to have a response strategy in place to ensure planetary security.
