Assessing the Transition to Value-Based Care: A House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee Hearing

Rodgers and Guthrie to Hold Health Subcommittee Hearing on CMS Innovation and Programs

The House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Subcommittee on Health Chair Brett Guthrie (R-KY) have announced a subcommittee hearing titled “Checking-In on CMMI: Assessing the Transition to Value-Based Care.” The purpose of this hearing is to evaluate the progress of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) in transitioning to value-based care.

The notice for the hearing states that it will be open to the public and press, with live streaming available online at . Any questions about the hearing can be directed to Emma Schultheis with the Committee staff at Emma.Schultheis@mail.house.gov, while press-related inquiries should be directed to Christopher Krepich at Christopher.Krepich@mail.house.gov.

Chairs Rodgers and Guthrie emphasized the importance of government programs keeping pace with medical innovation to improve health outcomes and save taxpayer dollars. In a joint statement, they noted that while CMMI was established over a decade ago with significant funding and authority, it has not yet demonstrated successful outcomes.

The witness for this hearing will be Elizabeth Fowler, Ph.D, J.D., Deputy Administrator and Director of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

During this hearing, Members will have the opportunity to hear from Fowler about the challenges she faces in achieving her mission and consider potential steps Congress could take to ensure beneficiaries are best served.

It is worth noting that value-based care is an approach that aims to improve patient outcomes by focusing on quality rather than volume measures such as hospitalizations or procedures performed.

The purpose of this subcommittee hearing is timely as healthcare providers continue their efforts to implement value-based care models across their organizations.

Overall, this hearing provides an opportunity for policymakers to assess how far we have come in transitioning to value-based care models and what more needs to be done to achieve our goals of improving patient outcomes while reducing healthcare costs.

As we move forward towards a more value-focused healthcare system, it is crucial that policymakers continue their efforts to support these initiatives through funding and regulation changes that encourage provider adoption of these models.
