The UNHCR conducts the Health Access and Utilization Survey (HAUS) to assess the healthcare accessibility that refugees have in Egypt. This cross-sectional survey was designed to monitor the refugee population’s access to and utilization of key health services.
To carry out this survey, 14 surveyors and one supervisor received a day of training, which included role-play exercises using the survey tool. The HAUS took place from December 3rd to December 13th, during which time refugee households were selected using stratified systematic random sampling from a list of households with registered telephone numbers. The head of household or another adult over 18 who could answer on their behalf was interviewed by phone about critical indicators of interest.
The nationalities represented in this survey included individuals from Syria, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Somalia, South Sudan, Yemen, Sudan, Afghanistan, and others. Data collected during the survey was entered into computers and analyzed using Microsoft Excel. The data was divided into four sections for analysis: all nationalities, Syrians, Sudanese, and other nationalities. The research covered sample characteristics, child health, antenatal care and reproductive health, chronic diseases and impairment, access and knowledge of health services
