Alabama School of Math and Science (ASMS) President Dr. John Hoyle recently unveiled the new Dr. Edward O. Wilson Science Research Center at the ASMS campus in Mobile, Alabama. Named after the famous Alabama native who discovered the first colony of non-native fire ants in Mobile, this is the only college-level research facility for high schoolers in the state.
The construction of the 32,000 square foot building cost around $15 million, with $6 million funded by the state. The remaining amount was raised through tax credits and private fundraising efforts. This significant upgrade from the school’s old facilities, which were housed in an old Baptist church and a former Sunday school, will provide students with opportunities to engage in high-level research projects.
Dr. Hoyle expressed his excitement about the transformative impact this new facility will have on their research capabilities, as teachers holding PhDs will now be able to conduct cutting-edge research alongside their students. ASMS is a public school that is open to all high school students in Alabama who wish to apply, offering a high-quality education with a focus on science and research.
