Arisa Trew Breaks Barriers and Wins Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year: The Story Behind the Skateboarding Prodigy’s Impressive Feat

Simone Biles Wins Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award After Impressive 2023 Season

Arisa Trew, a 13-year-old Australian skateboarding prodigy, recently made history by becoming the first female skateboarder to win the Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year award. She accomplished this feat by landing a 720 (two full rotations) in vert skateboarding at the Tony Hawk Vert Alert in Utah in 2023. Tony Hawk, who was the first skateboarder to land the trick in 1985 and is a member of the Laureus World Sports Academy, was among the event hosts.

Simone Biles, a four-time Olympic champion, has also been recognized for her impressive comeback after stepping away from gymnastics for mental health reasons following the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The 27-year-old athlete received another honor with the Comeback of the Year award and is now preparing to compete in the Paris Olympic Games later this year. Biles has already won the Sportswoman of the Year award three times.

Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham have also been named as recipients of awards at this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony held in Madrid. Bonmati was named as Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year while Bellingham won Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award. These awards were decided by 69 sporting legends who recognized their outstanding performance on and off field. Usain Bolt presented Bonmati with his iconic Sportswoman of the Year Award while last year’s Breakthrough winner Carlos Alcaraz handed out that category’s award to Bellingham.
