Argentina’s Fiscal Improvements Praise from IMF, But Long-Term Stability Still a Concern

In a press conference in Washington, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) praised the impressive progress seen in Argentina’s economy, particularly in fiscal terms, international reserves, and inflation. The Fund emphasized that the path to stabilization is not easy and requires a firm application of measures. Despite this, Kozack highlighted the fiscal surplus achieved in January and February, the recovery of international reserves, and the decreasing inflation rate as signs of impressive progress.

At the same time, Kozack emphasized that stability requires ongoing efforts and the improvement of fiscal adjustment quality. The IMF is supportive of the Argentine government’s initiatives to increase social assistance, but also stressed the importance of building social and political support for reforms. Minister Luis Caputo and his team are expected to attend the Spring Assembly of the IMF and World Bank in Washington to continue negotiations and discussions related to the economic program.

While discussing future plans for additional funding from the IMF, Kozack noted that it is premature to discuss details about a new program. The focus remains on current support measures aimed at achieving macroeconomic stability and sustainable growth in Argentina. Overall, Kozack highlighted that while significant progress has been made so far, it is crucial for Argentina to maintain its commitment to ongoing efforts if it hopes to achieve long-term stability and growth.
