Unattended E-Bike Battery Sparks Fire at McK Business, Thanks to Quick-Thinking Neighbor, Arcata Fire Avoids Disaster | Lost Coast Outpost

Arcata Fire District responded to a commercial structure fire on June 12 at the 1500 block of Nursery Way. The fire was quickly contained by three engines dispatched to the scene. While the fire was extinguished, smoke was present throughout the building. Additional fire units were canceled, and efforts were made to ventilate the building.

A neighbor reported that he had put out a Lithium Ion battery that was burning in the business where the fire took place. The damage caused by the fire was limited to E-bike components and a table, with some smoke damage throughout the business space.

The cause of the fire was determined to be a malfunctioning E-bike battery left charging. Arcata Fire District recognized Andrew Jordan’s quick thinking and action, which likely saved both the building and its contents from further harm. They also emphasized the importance of properly maintaining fire extinguishers, exercising caution when charging Lithium Ion batteries, and never leaving them unattended while charging.
