April’s Unusual Snowfall Puts German Town on High Alert

As the Bavarian Forest district of Regen braces for another wave of snow, the road is already covered in masses of fresh snow. Around 30 to 40 centimeters of snow fell at an altitude of 900 to 1000 meters, making it impossible for vehicles to pass without winter equipment. Despite the constant use of winter services, movement on the road is slow due to the snowy conditions. The mountain railway has closed its main gondola lift and the “Eisensteiner Hütte” inn for the next two days.

The Regen district office is urging residents to be cautious about the increasing snow loads on their roofs. Fire department spokesman mentioned that they cannot inspect every house or remove snow from private roofs. Although sudden snowfall in April is not uncommon in these regions, current weather is due to a low called “Annina” over Poland bringing cold air to Germany. Meteorologists predict heavy snowfall on Sunday night above 400 to 600 meters with more than 15 centimeters of fresh snow expected.

The German Weather Service attributes this weather to a low-pressure system over Poland that is bringing cold air to Germany. The sudden snowfall in April is not unusual in this region, with recent years recording snowfall into April. Nature in the Bavarian Forest continues to surprise with its diversity as the snowfall is expected to continue, and residents and authorities are taking measures to manage the situation.
