Apple’s Project Greymatter: Unveiling Advanced AI Capabilities for iOS 18 and macOS 15 at WWDC 2024

At WWDC 2024, Apple’s developer event will spotlight AI

Apple is set to unveil new Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities for its devices at the WWDC 2024, as part of its Project Greymatter strategy. The event, which will take place on June 10 and be led by Tim Cook, will feature a range of software updates and new AI tools that will enhance functions such as search in Safari, image editing in Photos, and smart summaries in Notes, Messages, and web pages.

One of the main focuses of the WWDC 2024 event will be AI. Apple has announced Project Greymatter, a collection of AI tools designed to enhance applications like Safari, Photos, and Notes. These tools include features like voice memo transcription, image retouching, and faster searches in Spotlight and Safari. Additionally, Apple is introducing personalized emoji creation in real-time based on user messages.

The AI functions will run either on the device itself or in the cloud for more resource-intensive tasks using M2 Ultra processors. Updates to the iOS 18 and macOS 15 operating systems include software to determine where AI functions should run. Apple stresses the importance of user privacy by running AI tasks locally with cloud-based functions having added security features in M series chips.

In addition to AI-powered tools, Apple is also introducing new features such as customizable app icons on the iPhone home screen. An ongoing partnership with OpenAI will enhance Apple’s AI technology while discussions with Google aim to include their generative AI engine, Gemini, in Apple devices. As Apple works to close agreements with AI technology partners users can expect a wave of new features and enhancements across their devices.

Overall, the WWDC 2024 promises to showcase Apple’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI technology and improving user experiences across all their products.
