Apple’s iPadOS Designated an ‘Access Gatekeeper’ Under EU Digital Markets Law

The European Commission has determined that iPadOS is an “access gatekeeper” under its Digital Markets Law, which aims to ensure fair competition in the market. As a result, Apple has been given a six-month period to adapt iPadOS to meet the requirements of this law.

Following an investigation that began in September, the European Commission determined that iPadOS is an essential gateway for professional users to reach end users. This designation means that Apple must make changes to the operating system of its iPad tablets in order to comply with the Digital Markets Law.

One of the changes that Apple must make is to make it easier for users to uninstall pre-installed applications on iPad devices, which are typically from Apple. Additionally, iPadOS will need to support the downloading and installation of applications from sources other than the App Store. These changes are expected to enhance competition in the market and promote user choice and flexibility in the use of iPad devices.

Users will have more control over the applications they use and where they download them from, ultimately leading to a more open and competitive digital ecosystem. By making these changes, Apple is demonstrating its commitment to complying with European regulations and promoting fair competition in the digital marketplace.
