Apple Postpones Launch of New AI Applications in EU Due to Privacy Concerns under Digital Markets Act

Apple recently unveiled new AI applications, but these will not be available in the European Union due to concerns about the European Digital Markets Act DMA. The interoperability requirements of the DMA could compromise user privacy and data security, leading to Apple’s decision not to launch the new features in the EU this year.

At the heart of Apple’s AI vision is giving software access to users’ data to personalize services. The system, known as ‘Apple Intelligence’, is designed to quickly answer questions, summarize emails, and prioritize them based on importance. Other features like ‘iPhone Mirroring’ and ‘SharePlay Screen Sharing’ will also be unavailable in the EU.

Apple is currently engaged in discussions with the European Commission to find a solution to the DMA compatibility issues. While a resolution is being sought, European users will not have access to the latest AI applications from Apple. These developments underscore the complexities of introducing new technology in a global marketplace with differing regulatory frameworks.
