Amazon awards $40,000 scholarships to 18 Maryland students studying computer science and engineering

In Baltimore, 18 Maryland students have been chosen as recipients of the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship. These students will receive up to $40,000 to study computer science or engineering starting this fall. They will also have the opportunity to participate in a paid internship with Amazon after their freshman year of college.

The scholarship recipients come from various high schools across the state and were selected based on their academic achievements, leadership skills, and community involvement. According to Victor Reinoso, the global director of education philanthropy at Amazon, the recipients of the scholarship have demonstrated a commitment to leveraging technology to uplift communities. In Maryland, there are over 12,800 open computing jobs but only 5,121 students graduated with a computer science degree in 2020. Despite 99 percent of all public high schools offering a course in computer science, there is still a significant gap in the number of graduates pursuing careers in this field.
