Amazon and Fs Italiane Group Join Forces to Boost Sustainability in European Logistics through Rail Transport

Amazon and Fs Italiane Group have partnered to transport goods between their distribution centers in Germany and Italy using rail transport. The partnership aims to reduce international road freight traffic, leading to lower CO2 emissions and congestion on European roads. By optimizing inventory management and reducing delivery times, Amazon can enhance the customer experience through this project.

The FS Group program involves three trains per week from Duisburg to Pomezia and six return trips between Herne and Verona, operated by Mercitalia Intermodal and TX Logistik, respectively. These routes are estimated to help avoid up to 9,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually compared to international road transport. Sabrina De Filippis, CEO of Mercitalia Logistics, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable transport solutions and the adoption of advanced technologies in logistics operations to reduce emissions while ensuring quality service.

Lorenzo Barbo, CEO of Amazon Italia Logistics, emphasized Italy’s potential for growth in the railway intermodal sector and the benefits of expanding the partnership with Mercitalia to develop sustainable and intermodal operations. By leveraging rail transport for freight between European sites, Amazon aims to innovate delivery methods and reduce CO2 emissions. The Duisburg-Pomezia and Herne-Verona routes serve as crucial connections between logistics hubs in Germany and Italy, supporting the Logistics Hub’s strategic objectives.

The collaboration between the FS Group, Mercitalia, and Amazon demonstrates a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation in logistics operations. By utilizing rail transport and implementing advanced technologies, these companies are working towards reducing CO2 emissions and improving delivery efficiency for a better customer experience.
