Alpacas and Well-being: How the YMCA is Promoting Mental Health in the Greater Scranton Area

Community event raises awareness for mental health

On Saturday, families in the Greater Scranton Area flocked to the YMCA in Dunmore for a free community event called “Thriving Together”. The purpose of the event was to raise awareness and celebrate the mental well-being initiative called “Mental health is wealth” by the organization.

Families were treated to a variety of family-friendly activities, including a giant dart board, bounce houses, and a meet and greet with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Mascot Tux. However, it was the presence of an alpaca petting zoo that seemed to have the most calming effect on everyone present.

Alpaca enthusiast Haley Schaffer explained how these animals serve as emotional support animals and are fluffy, friendly, and offer comfort similar to cuddle buddies or dogs at home. While having an alpaca as a pet may not be practical for everyone, interacting with them at events like this one can be soothing and enjoyable for attendees.

The program plans to continue hosting events that engage the community in various activities and practices that promote mental and emotional well-being. Events like these provide an opportunity for families and individuals to come together, have fun, and prioritize their mental health.
