Alarming Surge in Whooping Cough Cases Among Children in Vietnam Linked to Vaccine Supply Disruptions and Covid-19 Pandemic.

Ho Chi Minh City Recommends Vaccination after Recording 9 Cases of Whooping Cough Monthly

Ho Chi Minh City reported a significant increase in whooping cough cases among children in March, with 9 cases recorded compared to occasional cases in previous years. According to Deputy Director Le Hong Nga, most infected children are under two months old and have not been vaccinated due to interruptions in vaccine supply and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hanoi reported the highest number of cases in the country, with 46 children affected. The country has also seen an increase in infectious diseases that can be prevented by vaccines in the first three months of the year. Vaccination is essential in creating immunity against whooping cough and other infectious diseases.

The 5-in-1 vaccine protects against diseases like diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, and pneumonia/meningitis caused by Hib bacteria. It is crucial for children’s health and well-being as these diseases can have serious consequences. The vaccine is administered in three doses for children aged 2 months, 3 months, and 4 months, with the possibility of catching up missed doses as needed.

Parents are urged to prioritize their children’s vaccination schedules and ensure they receive all needed doses. According to Le Hong Nga, it is crucial for parents to monitor their children’s vaccination schedules closely and seek medical attention if they suspect symptoms of whooping cough or any other infectious disease. The city recently received 13,000 doses of the 5-in-1 vaccine and has distributed them to medical centers for free vaccination of children.

Whooping cough is a highly contagious disease that can affect individuals of any age but is most common in children. It is transmitted through respiratory secretions and can cause severe symptoms including uncontrollable coughing fits that can be life-threatening especially in young children with underlying health conditions.

In conclusion, timely vaccination and preventive measures are crucial in protecting children and communities from infectious diseases like whooping cough. Parents should prioritize their child’s health by monitoring their vaccination schedule closely and seeking medical attention if they suspect symptoms of any infectious disease.
