Akama Liz Takes Home Gold in Women’s Street Skateboarding Preliminaries at Shanghai Olympic Qualifier Series

Oda Yumeka loses world championship title as Akama Liz takes first place in the women’s street Olympic Qualifier Series preliminary competition.

On Friday, May 17th, at the Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China, Akama Liz emerged victorious in the women’s street skateboarding preliminaries with a commanding score of 87.14. The local fans were thrilled to witness the women’s street contest for the first time and cheered on the Japanese star.

After her win, Akama expressed her nervousness about running last in the semi-finals since she finished first in the preliminaries. She vowed to prepare as best she could for the competition. While Akama and her compatriots Nakayama Funa, Nishiya Momiji, Yoshizawa Coco, and Ito Miyu secured spots in the next round, it was a disappointing day for world champion Oda Yumeka who finished outside of the cut in 18th place after failing to land a clean run.

Top skaters Chloe Covell and Rayssa Leal also advanced to the semi-finals, finishing in second and sixth place respectively. Four Chinese skaters including Cui Chenxi qualified for the next round, much to the delight of home fans. The semi-finals of women’s street contest are scheduled for Saturday while Sunday will see final take place.
