Air Quality Health Advisory: Beware of Unhealthy Ground-Level Ozone Levels on Long Island and in NYC Metro Area

Health Advisory Issued Today for Ground-level Ozone in Long Island and NYC Metro Areas

Today, an air quality health advisory is in effect for both the Long Island region and the NYC metro area. The advisory is specific to ground-level ozone, which can be formed by summer heat and contribute to photochemical smog. On Long Island, the forecasted Air Quality Index (AQI) is 101, while in the NYC Metro Region it is 115. Both regions are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups such as children, older adults, and individuals with respiratory diseases like asthma.

The State Department of Health advises those in these groups, as well as those who exercise or work outdoors, to limit their physical activity during peak ozone levels in the afternoon to early evening. In addition to being unhealthy for sensitive groups, high ozone levels can also negatively impact outdoor activities like hiking and swimming.
