Midland Valley and Aiken athletes dominate track and field championships | Local Sports

At the Class AAAA track and field state championships, two local student-athletes had emotional victories. Eliza King of Aiken High School set a new state record in the javelin throw with a throw of 167 feet, 6 inches, finishing her high school career with a perfect record. On the other hand, Morgan Coverson-Springs from Midland Valley High School won gold medals in hurdles races that came down to the wire.

King’s success in the javelin throw has been consistent over the years, as she made 10-foot improvements each year at the state championships. Her last throw was nearly 50 feet farther than her closest competitor, and she broke her own state record by 11 feet. This victory also earned her the No. 1 national ranking on MileSplit. King expressed her emotions after the competition, stating that achieving her goal made her extremely happy and grateful.

Throughout her high school career, King has set goals to throw farther each year than the year before. Her dedication and hard work paid off, as she was able to meet and exceed her goals consistently. This year’s victory was especially meaningful for her, as she had set a bible verse as her season mantra and had been praying for her success. Additionally, she was thrilled to share the medal stand with her teammate Sandi King, who placed third in the event with a new record throw of her own. The two athletes were grateful for the opportunity to compete together in their senior year and celebrate their accomplishments.
