Nearly 100 policymakers, technology experts, and scholars from 15 countries in the Asia-Pacific region gathered in Ho Chi Minh City from April 22 to 24 for AI Connect II. The Regional Conference was organized by the US Department of State, Atlantic Council, and the Department of Science and Technology with a focus on discussing issues related to artificial intelligence development.
During the conference, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bui The Duy highlighted the potential of the Asia-Pacific region to become a hub for AI development. He emphasized the importance of information exchange and international cooperation among member countries to ensure sustainable growth in AI. While acknowledging the benefits of AI in areas such as economic development and healthcare, Mr. Duy also stressed the need to address concerns related to socio-economic and ethical aspects of AI.
Vietnam has developed a National Strategy and Policy aimed at capitalizing on the benefits of AI while mitigating risks. The country aims to encourage responsible AI research and development, integrate AI into sectors like transportation and healthcare, enhance human resources, adjust policies and regulations, develop standards, and engage in international AI cooperation. The conference seeks to support low-income countries in Southeast Asia in participating more effectively in global discussions on AI policy.
The OECD has recognized the transformative potential of AI while acknowledging its challenges and ethical considerations. Governments are urged to ensure that AI systems are designed with respect for human values and laws while prioritizing human safety and privacy. While there are no formal international principles on AI, countries developing policies often refer to OECD guidelines. As such, this conference promotes responsible and inclusive AI development in line with OECD guidelines.
In conclusion, policymakers from various Asian Pacific countries gathered at Ho Chi Minh City’s regional conference called “AI Connect II” from April 22 – 24th organized by US Department of State, Atlantic Council & Vietnam’s Department of Science & Technology with an aim to discuss issues related to artificial intelligence development among member states.
During this event Deputy Minister Bui The Duy emphasized that information exchange & international cooperation were essential for sustainable growth in developing regions like Vietnam where they have developed a National Strategy & Policy aimed at capitalizing on benefits while minimizing risks associated with technological advancements.
Moreover Vietnamese government is promoting responsible research & development within sectors such as transportation & healthcare; enhancing human resources; adjusting policies/regulations; creating standards; engaging internationally while referring heavily upon OECD principles which promote ethical considerations when developing advanced technologies.
Overall this meeting served as an opportunity for governments across Asia Pacific region not just share knowledge but also work together towards building a better future through responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
