The Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), a state-run institution, has partnered with Galaxy Corp., an artificial intelligence and metaverse start-up, to develop cutting-edge technologies to support the K-pop industry. Galaxy specializes in combining artificial intelligence and virtual reality technologies with entertainment content and is well-known for representing K-pop star G-Dragon. On Monday, the two entities signed a memorandum of understanding to secure scientific and technological resources for the global K-pop business. Additionally, they will establish a joint research center for the development and commercialization of related technologies.

This partnership between KAIST and Galaxy Corp. dates back to February 2022 when Galaxy used its technology to present KAIST President Lee Kwang-hyung’s speech with avatars during a graduation ceremony. Established in 2019, Galaxy has been involved in the production of popular TV shows like “Street Woman Fighter” (2021) and “Physical: 100” (2024). KAIST President Lee expressed his excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the opportunity to apply science and technology to the global stage through K-content and culture.

Galaxy CEO Choi Yong-ho announced that G-Dragon will participate in a talk show with Lee at the Innovate Korea 2024 conference at KAIST’s main campus in Daejeon on June 5 as part of their partnership. G-Dragon joined Galaxy after ending his contract with YG Entertainment in December 2023, making his comeback with a new album set for release later this year after an almost seven-year hiatus from the music industry.
