50-year-old Andy Macdonald qualifies for Paris Olympics in skateboarding

In 1996, Andy Macdonald made history in the world of vert skateboarding by winning the competition at the X Games at the age of 22. Little did he know that years later, he would qualify for the park skateboarding event at the 2024 Paris Olympics at the age of 50. Despite his age, Macdonald earned one of the final spots in the 16-man semifinals at the last Olympic qualifier in Budapest, making it to the coveted field of 22 men.

Macdonald’s journey to the Olympics is a testament to his dedication and passion for skateboarding. He is credited with owning the highest number of medals won at X Games vert and has even skated in White House! With a British father, Macdonald is eligible to represent Great Britain at the Olympics, adding another achievement to his impressive list.

However, he is not alone in competing for a spot on Team USA. Denmark’s Rune Glifberg, who competed in skateboarding’s Olympic debut in Tokyo at age 46, also fell short of qualifying for Paris. Glifberg has been a prominent figure in skateboarding since its early days, finishing third in X Games vert’s inaugural event won by Tony Hawk.

The enduring passion and dedication that elite skateboarders bring to their sport are showcased through these journeys. It highlights how diverse and skilled this community is. As athletes continue to update their rosters as they qualify for Paris 2024, we can expect more stories like Macdonald and Glifberg’s – tales of hard work and determination that inspire us all.
