Afghanistan has made history by qualifying for the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals. They achieved this feat by defeating Australia in the Super 8s, a remarkable accomplishment that caught the attention of the cricket world. This victory proved that Afghanistan belongs among the elite teams in international cricket, no longer considered the ‘minnows’ in the sport.
After their win over Australia, Afghanistan faced Bangladesh in the final match of the Super 8s. However, rain interruptions caused delays and reduced the number of overs to 19. Bangladesh had a revised target of 114 runs to chase in those reduced overs to stay in contention for the semi-finals.
Despite Bangladesh’s best efforts to chase down the target in just 12.1 overs, Afghanistan’s bowlers put up a tough fight. Naveen-ul-Haq was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament. In the end, Bangladesh won by a narrow margin of just eight runs using DLS method, knocking Afghanistan out of the tournament and sending Australia through to the semi-finals.
Although they lost this match, Afghanistan’s journey in the T20 World Cup was nothing short of remarkable. Naveen-ul-Haq expressed his pride in his team’s hard work and determination throughout this incredible experience. The team will now face South Africa in the semi-finals, showcasing their talent and determination on an even bigger stage.
