Addressing Mental Health Flaws in Our Healthcare System: Essentia CEO Urges Value-Based Care

Neglecting Mental Health: The Often Overlooked Issue – Duluth News Tribune

Dr. David Herman, CEO of Essentia, presented on March 16th in the News Tribune column about the flaws in our current healthcare system. He emphasized the importance of value-based care for better health outcomes that can also be cost-effective. This approach considers a person’s total health and highlights the need for a more holistic care approach in local health systems.

Essentia was involved in the 2023-2025 Regional Community Health Needs Assessment, which identified mental health as one of the top three health concerns in the area. However, Dr. Herman noted that his healthcare system has been lacking in investment for mental health services. To truly embrace value-based care, it is essential to address all aspects of a person’s health, including mental health.

I completely agree with Dr. Herman’s statement that “If you want something different, you need to do something different.” I hope that Essentia and other local health systems take meaningful action by investing in comprehensive mental health services to improve individuals’ overall health and well-being in our community. As we look forward to positive changes in our local healthcare systems, prioritizing mental health services and providing better care for all individuals is crucial.
