Pegasus Distillerie, a company based in France, has recently launched a new product called Shooting Star Vodka. This unique vodka is infused with original chondrite meteorites that were collected in Nebraska in 1977. The meteorites are believed to have landed on Earth in 1910 and were named Huntsman (b) after their discoverer. Maxime Girardin, the founder of Pegasus Distillerie, obtained these meteorites through an intermediary in Arizona as he sought to experiment with ingredients of extraterrestrial origin.
While Girardin comes from a long line of winemakers in Burgundy, France, he decided to take a different path with his new company by experimenting with ingredients of extraterrestrial origin. Popular Science describes Shooting Star Vodka as having a unique combination of bitterness and sweetness, even though it contains no sugar. The vodka is produced using organic wheat and barley from France, along with purified water collected from an underground river that flows through limestone layers 150 meters below the Burgundy factory.
Infused beverages have been enjoyed for thousands of years, with osmosis playing a key role in the process. During Shooting Star’s 18-month maceration process, terracotta jars are used to enhance the flavor. These jars allow oxygen to permeate through their porous walls, creating a bond between the vodka and the dissolved meteorite minerals. While the vodka is made from meteorites exposed to interstellar radiation over billions of years, the radiation levels present are even lower than those found in an indoor kitchen island.
