A Record-Breaking Linne’s Two-Toed Sloth Celebrates His 54th Birthday at the Krefeld Zoo

A Linne’s two-toed sloth named Jan, who resides at the Krefeld Zoo in Germany, recently celebrated his unofficial 54th birthday. Jan was found in South America on May 1, 1986, when he was estimated to be about six months old. Since then, he has been living at the zoo and is considered to be at least 54 years old.

Jan holds two Guinness World Records: the oldest living sloth in captivity and the oldest sloth in captivity ever. Typically, Linne’s two-toed sloths live for about 20 years, so Jan has more than doubled his life expectancy. Despite his age, zoo officials say that Jan remains in great health and has recently fathered his 22nd child.

The zoo is proud to have the world’s oldest sloth living on their premises. Jan’s longevity and ability to continue reproducing at an advanced age is a testament to the excellent care he receives at the zoo. Fans of Jan look forward to celebrating his birthday each year and hope to see him continue to thrive in the days to come.
