A New Era of Lunar Exploration: China’s Successful Return of Samples from the Far Side of the Moon

Chang’e 6 mission returns nearly 2 kilograms of samples from Moon’s far side

On Friday, China made a thrilling announcement regarding the successful return of samples from the far side of the Moon through the Chang’e-6 mission. The total weight of the samples was 1,935.3 grams, and they were the first to be brought back to Earth from the hidden side of the Moon. These distinctive samples were handed over to research teams in Beijing during a special ceremony, where Ge Ping, deputy director of the CNSA Lunar Exploration and Engineering Center, noted that they appeared more viscous than previous ones with lumps.

The Chang’e-6 mission landed in Inner Mongolia on June 25 and marked a significant milestone in China’s lunar exploration efforts. The sample collection took place at the Aitken crater located at the South Pole of the Moon, one of the largest and oldest craters on the lunar surface. Researchers are now eager to study these samples in detail as they have unique characteristics that have piqued their interest.

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated the team behind this mission and praised China’s advancements in space exploration as it strives to become a leading space and technological power. The country has ambitious plans for future lunar missions, with Chang’e-7 scheduled to explore water ice deposits at
