A New Era for Women’s Football: Brazil Prepares to Host 2027 Women’s World Cup in South America

Brazil is set to host the upcoming World Cup

In 2024, Brazil was announced as the host of the women’s World Cup in 2027, making it the first time the tournament will be held in South America. This decision comes a decade after Brazil hosted the men’s football World Cup in 2014. The country’s candidacy for the 2027 tournament, titled “It’s All Ready,” emphasized its existing infrastructure developed in preparation for the 2014 World Cup.

Brazil has a long history of hosting major sporting events, including the Pan-American Games in 2007, the Olympic Games in 2016, and the Copa America in 2019 and 2021. The preparation for these events was initiated during Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s terms as Brazilian president and has left a legacy that led to Brazil’s women’s football championship in 2017.

The organizers of the upcoming women’s World Cup are excited about promoting gender equality through this event. According to Julia Costa, director of women’s football promotion within the Sports Ministry, while expenses and revenue for the women’s tournament will be significantly less than those of men, with projected investments of USD 13 million for temporary structures, public funds will not be required.

The hosting of this tournament represents a significant step forward in advancing gender equality in sports and celebrating women athletes’ achievements. The organizers hope that it will exceed expectations and showcase Brazil’s commitment to promoting women’s football on an international scale.
