A Major Boost for Pakistan’s Energy Sector: The Dasu Hydropower Project Receives $1 Billion Funding

Pakistan’s energy sector is set to receive a major boost with the approval of $1 billion in funding from the World Bank for the construction of its largest Dasu hydropower project. This project, which will be carried out in collaboration with China, is expected to address the challenges faced by Pakistan’s energy sector and improve access to electricity for local communities. The loan from the World Bank will be used to expand hydropower electricity supply, ultimately contributing to a greener energy sector and reducing the cost of electricity in the country.

Najy Benhassine, the World Bank director for Pakistan, highlighted the importance of this project in transforming Pakistan’s energy landscape. Once completed, the hydropower project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province will have an installed capacity of 4,320 to 5,400 megawatts. This makes it a game-changer for Pakistan’s energy sector and has significant potential to impact its energy needs positively.

The construction of this dam and other projects related to China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) have also seen Chinese workers involved. However, some Chinese workers have been targeted by militants in recent years due to accusations that they were exploiting Pakistan’s mineral resources. Despite these challenges, this collaboration between Pakistan and China represents a significant step towards addressing Pakistan’s energy needs and moving towards a more sustainable energy future.

In conclusion, the Dasu hydropower project is poised to revolutionize Pakistan’s energy sector by providing sustainable solutions that address current challenges faced by its communities while contributing towards a cleaner environment. With $1 billion in funding from the World Bank and collaboration with China on board, this project marks a significant milestone towards achieving sustainable development goals in Pakistan’s energy sector.
