On Sunday, over three thousand people walked along the North Shore in support of families experiencing maternal and infant health problems, as part of the March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser. The organization has been working to improve the health outcomes of babies for more than 40 years, and this year’s event was no exception.
One of the many families participating in the walk was John Bricker of Harrisburg, who has been attending the March for Babies event for 50 years. Despite losing his son Greg to a heart defect at just three and a half years old in 1982, John remains dedicated to the cause and has become an advocate for families facing similar challenges. He hopes that through his efforts, every child can be born with a fighting chance at a healthy life.
The March of Dimes annual report highlights the pressing issue of high preterm birth rates and pregnancy-related complications in the United States. The organization emphasizes the importance of supporting families who may be experiencing similar challenges, like John and his family. Jim Hogan, chair of the Western Pennsylvania Board of Directors, also stresses the importance of this work and encourages everyone to get involved.
As John nears his fundraising goal of $1 million, he is honored with the first annual ‘John Bricker Legacy Award’ for his unwavering commitment to helping others. Through his efforts, he hopes to continue making a difference in the lives of babies and their families for years to come.
