A Giant in Physics: The Life and Legacy of Peter Higgs

University announces death of Peter Higgs, the scientist behind the proposal of the Higgs boson particle, at age 94

Renowned physicist Peter Higgs, known for proposing the existence of the Higgs boson particle, passed away peacefully at his home in Edinburgh at the age of 94. The University of Edinburgh announced his death after he was diagnosed with a brief illness.

Higgs was an emeritus professor at the university and had predicted the Higgs boson particle in 1964, which was later confirmed almost five decades later at the Large Hadron Collider. His theory revolutionized our understanding of how subatomic particles acquire mass and played a key role in the Standard Model of physics.

In recognition of his pioneering work, Higgs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013, alongside Francois Englert of Belgium. Born in Edinburgh, Higgs’ legacy continues to inspire countless scientists and researchers, shaping the future of physics for generations to come.
