A Different World: HBCU Reunion Tour Brings Star Power and Scholarships to Historically Black Colleges

The Cast of ‘A Different World’ brings their Tune to The White House

A Different World cast reunites for a national tour of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to raise scholarship funds at participating institutions. The tour is led by producers Debbie Allen and Susan Fales, who are joined by alums such as Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer, Glynn Turman, and Sinbad.

During their stop in Washington, D.C., the group visited the White House to meet Vice President Kamala Harris and Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. The visit was captured by journalist April Ryan of The Grio on Instagram. One of the highlights of the visit was a sing-along of the show’s theme song led by Jean-Pierre. They opted for the version featured throughout most of the sitcom’s run, sung in its original version by Aretha Franklin.

The tour’s goal is to inspire a new generation to choose HBCUs as their academic homes by leveraging the star power and cultural impact of A Different World. The cast has been working together since 1987 when the show first aired and has become an integral part of HBCU culture ever since.
